The Marion County High School Athletics Department is looking to memorialize some of its greatest sports figures, and community members are asked to be involved.
Under the direction of Athletics Director Michael Holt, the department is currently accepting nominations for the inaugural class of its Athletic Hall of Fame. Players, coaches, teams, and other contributors can be nominated for the honor.
In addition to those associated with Marion County High School, nominees can also come from the former high schools throughout the county. Community members are encouraged to review the nomination and election guidelines and then complete the nomination form which can be accessed here or by visiting the MCHS Athletics website at www.marioncountyathletics.com.
Nominations are due by October 30.
As Holt explains it, the need for an MCHS Athletics Hall of Fame was somewhat overdue.
“It’s just something that needs to be done in my opinion because I feel like there’s a lot of athletes, coaches, teams, and contributors that have done a lot to get Marion County athletics where it is and I think they deserve recognition for what they accomplished,” he said.
Following the nomination period, a nine-member committee, comprised of current and former teachers and coaches as well as community members -- all with a strong understanding of the history of local athletics -- will select the inaugural inductees.
While there is not a set number of inductees for this first class, Holt said he anticipates that some of the historic athletic figures in Marion County will be selected.
“In this inaugural season I really think the committee is going to look back into the roots and where it all started,” Holt said. “That’s not to say a more recent player or team couldn’t get in, but I think they’re going to recognize those who started our athletic traditions.”
Nominees who are not selected will be considered in the future as nominations will remain on file for two additional years, Holt explained.
While all the details are still being finalized, the inductees will be recognized at a home MCHS basketball game and will also be invited to attend an induction ceremony the following evening.
Holt also said he’s looking forward to former players and coaches returning to MCHS to see the improvements made to the school’s facilities.
“I’m excited about bringing people back, especially those who were here in ‘70’s and ‘80’s so they can see everything that’s been done -- not just the gym but the school as a whole,” Holt said. “They’re going to be in awe of what’s been done over the past several years.”
As for community members who might consider submitting a nomination, Holt’s message was simple: “The biggest thing is, if you think someone should be inducted, nominate them.”
